Our Story

Our Story

WoodHaven Rescue Farm, technically established in 2001 in Charlotte, Tennessee, has a rich history. Susan Whaley and her husband Gary purchased 22 acres of land, constructed their home and barns, and dedicated over twelve years to rescuing various animals. Susan, a licensed wildlife rehabilitator in Kentucky, collaborated with veterinarian practices to care for injured and orphaned wildlife. In addition to wildlife, Susan and Gary also took in foster dogs, stray cats, poultry, rabbits, parrots, ponies, and donkeys.

Tragically, Susan lost her husband in 2014. Seeking solace and healing, she returned to her hometown of Lafayette, Indiana, to be close to her family. As always, the unconditional love of animals provided her with immense comfort. Susan relocated to Indiana with her beloved dogs, cats, and horses. Once she built her barn, she promptly expanded her rescue efforts, taking in more animals in need.

With over five decades of experience working with a diverse range of animals, Susan’s passion for animal welfare drives the mission of WoodHaven Rescue Farm. The farm aims to provide a safe haven for animals requiring socialization, rehabilitation, respite, and retirement. Susan specializes in elderly end-of-life care and nursing orphaned newborns through weaning. Some of the permanent residents at WoodHaven Rescue Farm have behavioral issues stemming from abuse or lack of socialization, as well as chronic and debilitating medical conditions that make adoption challenging.
